What Is The “ARNI” Approach?
My 1:1 stroke retraining & rehabilitation exercise sessions are:
-
Evidence-based & clinically supported – using proven ARNI methods
-
Completely tailored to your current abilities and goals
-
Focused on independence – not just exercises, but practical self-management skills
-
Delivered in your own home – familiar surroundings, less stress
Together, we work step by step to strengthen movement patterns, reduce spasticity, improve coordination, and build the confidence you need to keep progressing between sessions.
Some challenges ARNI can help stroke survivors tackle…
Many stroke survivors tell me they feel “left on their own” once formal rehab ends. You may be:
- Struggling with spasticity in your hand
- Living with foot drop or muscle weakness
- Finding it harder to walk, balance or do daily tasks
- Feeling frustrated or unsure what to do next
These challenges are common — but they don’t have to be permanent.

Action For Rehabilitation From Neurological Injury
Why ARNI Works
ARNI (Action for Rehabilitation from Neurological Injury) was founded by Dr Tom Balchin after his own stroke at age 21.
His approach which is grounded in determination and clinical research, has helped thousands of survivors continue meaningful recovery long after discharge.
As an associate of ARNI, I bring this specialist knowledge directly to you.
“I feel positive”
I have worked with Carol since May 2021. I had a stroke end of March and made excellent progress since then.
Carol visits me three times a week and after every session, I feel positive both physically and mentally.
Carol is always positive but never too easy, and every week I have made progress in my recovery eg: walking further and getting up from a dining chair without assistance. She has brought aids which help with my dexterity and is always thinking of ways to help my progress.
Peter’s Story
Peter was training for his fourth London Marathon when he had a stroke that caused weakness on his right side and aphasia. After community and private physio, his recovery plateaued.
Through the Help for Heroes / ARNI programme, Peter began working with Carol.
Within just two sessions he regained the ability to get down to the floor and back up — a huge boost to his confidence. From there, he progressed to walking without a stick, managing stairs more easily, and even returning to parkrun-style circuit training.
Strength training with kettlebells and bodyweight exercises has built his mobility and power, while creative drills like hurdles and the “Peter Duncan double whammy” have improved his balance and upper limb function.
He now tackles everyday tasks more confidently and is even practicing skills for his hobby of fishing.
“Bit by bit they are giving me my husband back. We work as a team, and for Pete and me this approach really works.” — Anne
